What are the health benefits of breastfeeding?

Breastfeeding provides increased health benefits for babies and their mothers. The health benefits of breast milk are due to the species-specific live cells, antibodies and hormones that are present in human milk but lacking in formula.

Full term infants are less likely to develop:

Colds, pneumonia & asthma, Ear infections, Diarrhea, Skin conditions like eczema, Type 1 and 2 diabetes, Leukemia, Obesity, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS)

Mothers are less likely to develop:

Services & Bookings

Before Your Lactation Consultation

If you have made an appointment for a lactation consultation, you will need to fill out a Consent/Intake form before the visit. You will receive an email/invite from Milknotes (HIPPAA compliant) to create a profile, this is where you will find the intake forms/consents and completed care plans. You may access the Parent Portal on my website at any time to sign in.  In most cases I will need to observe your baby nursing and keeping a hungry baby waiting while mom fills out paperwork can be super stressful. In order to avoid this situation, I suggest having these forms already filled out prior to consult. This will ensure that your consultation can start without delay. If possible, baby should be neither too hungry, nor too full.  If your baby wants to feed within 30-45 minutes of the consultation start time, offering a short feeding may be enough to satisfy him/her until the observed feeding takes place.

Initial Consultation
Consults are individualized and vary to meet the needs of your family. The initial lactation consult is thorough and comprehensive, usually lasting about 1.5 hours. At the initial consult I will take a detailed history of the maternal and infant health and birthing history, complete a physical assessment of mother’s breasts, baby’s oral anatomy, functional assessment, assist with positioning and latching during feed, and identify any other feeding barriers. I will also complete a pre and post weighted feed at every visit.  Detailed written care plan for how to best optimize your breastfeeding goals, address questions and concerns and provided referrals to other providers if services are needed. Often follow up consults are needed.

Follow-up

Follow-consult I will reassess current progress, complete a new feeding assessment, maternal assessment, weight check, and address any new or old concerns. I will also update the care plan if needed. As feeding specialists, please keep in mind that consults are for all moms which include exclusive at breast, pumping and breastfeeding, exclusive pumping, bottle feeding and supplementation, formula feeding and dietary restrictive feedings.

Secure Video Virtual Consult

You can connect to a IBCLC feeding specialist via a private, secure video connection from your laptop, tablet or mobile device in real-time in the privacy of your chosen location from anywhere in the world. You must have a high-speed internet connection to participate. Here are just some of the things I can assess virtually.
